'Who can do edits?' Inside the underground world of college recruiting graphic design

An hour before LSU football coach Ed Orgeron's trademark "Hold That Tiger!" recruiting tweet, a high school star defensive end scrambled to find an artist.
"Who can do edits???" Alec Bryant posted on Twitter at 5:06 p.m. Monday.

Time was ticking.

Sports reporters, athletes and fans were starting to catch on that Bryant, a junior at Shadow Creek High in Pearland, Texas, was going to announce his commitment to the LSU Tigers' 2020 recruiting class.

Bryant wanted to join the trend that has swept up nearly every major modern athlete in college football: He wanted a graphic to post along with his announcement — an artistic picture with swagger and flash and flare, the type that's become standard in the social media age.

Perhaps you've seen similar graphics flood your social media timelines. The hundreds of photos with their digitized logos and footballs have probably only just started to fade away, now that national signing day has been over for nearly two weeks.

But where do they come from?

Luckily for Bryant, his social media following allowed him to crowd-source:
"@GeauxEdits The Best!!" one person replied
"@GeauxEdits best in the business," another wrote. READ MORE

December 18, 2018Before District defensive lineman Cam Goode’s announcement on Wednesday of where he plans to play college football next season, just a handful of people know his choice: his parents, his high school coaches and a stranger in Baton Rouge whom Goode knows only through Twitter direct messages.

Meet Daniel Vlosky, a longtime college football fan who works in IT. He’s the person Goode entrusted with his secret for the sake of receiving a graphic to artfully announce his college choice, Maryland or Central Florida, on social media.

Gone are the days in which college football recruits only have one way to publicize their decisions: by selecting a hat while seated in front of a television camera. Those scenes are still common, and the signing of a national letter-of-intent remains an important visual of the recruiting process. But now recruits also cater to audiences online, not just sharing their final decisions but publicly narrowing their top candidates throughout the process.
“When they’re announcing something this big, they want to do it with style," said Vlosky, 32, who makes the graphics under the alias Geaux Edits. READ MORE...

Although it feels like ages ago when I first came into contact with Joel, in reality, it was only 10-11 months ago. He was fresh off of his Sophomore year looking to get an edit for a major football program that recently contacted him with an offer. We've kept in contact over the months and i've enjoyed watching him show out at team camps all summer long and continually growing that impressive offer list.
Scouting Report:
  • He has elite size (6'2 188lbs) and athleticism. Will continue to grow as he is only a Junior.
  • Great hand eye coordinator and hands. (VIDEO)
  • High energy and effort player (VIDEO @ 2:05 mark)
  • High points the ball and can climb the ladder. Skill is displayed when playing with WR or DB.
  • Fluid movement on both sides of the ball playing WR or DB.

Notes from our conversation:
  • His phone/texts/DMs/snail mail/etc always lighting up from power 5 schools.
  • He doesn't have a leader in his recruitment at the moment. As a junior it is still relatively early.
  • No timeline on a commit either. See note above.
  • Some of the major factors for him in choosing a school is where he can play, show his skill set, and subsequently make it to the league.
  • He definitely likes the love he is shown from all the schools that are recruiting him. However, the one thing on his mind that he doesn't like about the process is telling coaches when he has decided not to go to their school.
  • First thing when he thinks about LSU is DBU, WRU, & Home.
  • He appreciates all the love he is shown by the LSU staff and realizes that there is no place like home (Baton Rouge).
  • Being a native from Baton Rouge he is obviously very familiar with the program, school, campus, etc.
  • His next visit to Death Valley? This Saturday (9/22/18) when LSU takes on LA Tech.

The two big things that stood out to my most after talking to Mike Wyman is that the Junior out of Greensboro, NC is an impressive athlete on the field and perhaps an even better scholar off of it. Mike has that rare blend of elite athletic ability and superior intelligence. He looks like he could step onto campus at a major D1 school and start right away and would also post up a 3.5gpa (at least) in his classes. Yes, as mentioned before, he is only a Junior in high school.

Scouting Report:
  • Prototypical NFL size @ 6’4 195
  • Great downfield speed
  • High points the ball in the air (VIDEO)
  • Elite hand eye coordination
  • Catches the ball with his hands (VIDEO)

Notes from our conversation:
  • Hears from so many different schools. Here is the accumulation of mail he gets in a 3-day span:

  •

  • He is mainly focused on the schools that are currently focusing on him. No time to worry about other things except for football and school.
  • Biggest factor in picking a school is the academics. Math & science are his favorite subjects.
  • When he thinks of LSU he thinks of DBU and, as a WR, likes the fact that he would be able to come in and compete everyday against top tier talent.
  • He has plans to visit LSU this season. (Has not visited yet)
  • He attends Middle College NC A&T (a high academic HS program) for academic courses and holds a 3.8 GPA. He has obtained 14hrs of college credit to date. However, on Friday's he plays football for Dudley H.S.
  • He is an early enrollee and would be able to make it on campus Jan. 2020

While he holds an impressive offer list he currently does not hold an offer from LSU. He does hear from them  and I could see an offer being extended at some point this season. Mike is a very high character, athletic, and intelligent player and the school that he decides on attending will be lucky to have him.

Nehki Meredith // DB // Virginia beach, VA

I had the chance to chat with Nehki Meredith a 5'11 175lb 4-star Safety out of Virginia Beach, VA. After watching some tape on him this is what I noticed. He has a knack to be around the ball and more importantly make game changing plays. He possesses a great break on the ball after it's thrown and from what I can tell has great hands as well.  Nehki does not back down from coming down into the box and getting involved in stopping the run game. Although slightly taller, he reminds me of Tyrann Mathieu coming out of H.S. with his constant presence around the ball (VIDEO), causing turnovers (VIDEO), and game changing performances. Oh and by the way. The tape I reviewed was from his Sophomore year.

Also, for just being a Junior in H.S., he seems to be extremely mature as you will see in some of his answers below. He has at least somewhat of a direction on where/what he wants to do with his life which is more than most of us could say at the age of 16/17.  I was very impressed with Nehki both with our on the field and off the field discussions.

  1. Teams you are hearing from a lot: Penn State, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, UNC, & Louisville.

  2. Teams you would like to hear from that you really haven't: Florida and Bama

  3. At this moment who do you feel leads your recruitment: Penn State, LSU, & Virginia Tech

  4. Biggest factor in deciding on a school: Bond with the coaches & good relationship with his family, top tier business school, alumni & networking.

  5. Things you don’t like about the recruitment process: The constant traveling.

  6. First thing that comes to mind when you hear LSU: Tyrann Mathieu & DBU

  7. Things you like about LSU: Louisiana culture, Rap game is legit (youngboy, jaydayyoungn, etc)

  8. Things you dont like about LSU: N/A

  9. When do you think you’ll visit LSU next? Will try for Bama game Nov 3rd.
